Where do I report scams

Many people ask 'where do I report scams'? Many people who have been scammed want to report scams but do not know how to report scams or where to report scams. Scam reporting is very important both to prevent a scam from happening and to help people who have been scammed get their money back. The followings outline how to report a scam including a scam that you received through email or internet. Most scams are internet scams, especially work at home scams.

Where do I report scams
  • call your local state attorney's office
  • call the Better Business Bureau in the city or state of the scammer
  • call your local consumer protection agency
  • call the National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060 or visit www.fraud.org.
  • If you received the scam by mail, call your local post office and report the scammer.
  • If you have a consumer problem or complaint, write to the Federal Trade Commission.
Report scams to state attorney's general offices

You can contact your state attorney's general office and report the scams and you can also contact the state attorney's general office of the state where the scammer is. The state attorney's general office will ask you to fill out a form of complaint or you can write them a letter. When they receive your letter, they will contact the scammer and get their point of view. This usually scares scammers and is a good thing for consumers. Be sure to contact the state attorney's general offices. Most of them are pretty efficient in responding to your complaint.

Report scams to the Federal Trade Commission

The Federal Trade Commission cannot act to resolve individual problems. However, the FTC can act when it sees a pattern of possible law violations. The will keep your complaint on file and when it is in the public interest, they will do something about it. You can write to the FTC at:

Correspondence Branch, Federal Trade Commission, 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington D.C. 20580. You can also call them at 202-326-2418 or visit their website at www.ftc.gov. It is probably best to report scams by mail as they would tell you when you call them.
